Technology has changed the realm of dating drastically, and I’m not sure we’re adapting in the right ways. Facebook can now tell us 90% of the things we want to know about a person, yet we still ask our dates, lest we come across like a stalker. For a date to be worthwhile, you’re going to have to take it a step further than your parents. Find a way to learn the stuff about a person that you can’t know from their facebook (or in many cases, their Tumblr). Welcome to the 500 Days of Summer era of dating. There is a lot of pressure to be cute and creative, but don’t let that get in the way of your decision making. Not every date can be pretend-you-live-in-the-models-at-Ikea.
Museums: Find a person who can appreciate a museum, and half the battle has been done for you. Maybe there is an exhibition coming through town that you’ve been dying to see. Just make sure the person you’re on a date is going out of genuine interest, not because they want to get in your pants.
Be tourists: There has got to be something in the place you live, unless that place IS BFE, that you have yet to do or see. Maybe you grew up in SF, but never once took a trip to Alcatraz. Touristy activities are actually great for dates, they’re often outside, they take a few hours, and people travel thousands of miles to do them for a reason.
“Let’s go to the mall!”: Ok. I know it sounds really high school, but shopping is fun, and you can tell what kind of taste a person has. Also, it’s a great pretense for hanging out. I would recommend sandwiching this around a movie. That way, you avoid the whole, “How do I get to know someone while sitting silently in the dark next to them for 2 hours?” If you live in a big city it’s not as cheesy.
Hookah: It’s like coffee, only more exotic.
Special Events: This is one of the easiest ways to ask someone out on a date. “Hey such-in-such is in town, we should totally go.” This could include a concert, festival, athletic event, or Kathy Griffin.
Whatever you do, don’t do why don’t you come over and we can watch a movie? That just leads to…not getting to know a person, not matter how great that can be at times.
Quirky Shit I Challenge You to Do That People Would Only Do in a Movie:
Volunteer together at an old folk’s home
Write inspirational messages and then distribute them in random mailboxes
Take old-timey pictures together at an old Western town and then insert them in history books at a library.
Attend a gospel church mass.
Put an ad on craigslist for “free hugs” and wait in a park for people to show up.
Get metal detectors and attempt to find buried treasure
Wear blue vests and pretend to be door greeters at Walmart

welp….I’m on page 88 of your blog. But I’m totally not tumblr-stalking you or anything. Just saying. Nice blog.:)
Also…I like the challenges at the end of this post a lot.

Oh, these are wonderful. :D

I, Procrastinator

About

Avatar This tumblelog is a collection of seemingly random bits of funny, geeky and even racy nonsense, which are discoveries of the (mis)adventures of this twenty-something-year-old and his protracted battle against the doom of all men.

If you want to ask me something, go right ahead. I'll be nice.

On the other hand, if you've got something you'd like me to ponder on, send it my way and I'll ruminate on the implications and ramifications of that little nugget you want me to intellectually nibble on.

I am also the co-moderator of another tumblelog, Fuck Yeah, Wiccan!, which is dedicated to the eponymous Marvel Comics superhero.
